Haiti Staff Member Receives an Award!

Janvier Allenz, one of our teachers in Haiti, received an award for his hard work and dedication to Tek4Kids. He was presented a certificate for his punctuality, teamwork, collaborative skills and his dedication to the mission of Tek4Kids. Allenz worked hard to help our head teacher, Laura Desmangles, organize a two-week training session for the Tek4Kids teachers in June, providing her with assistance in preparation and support throughout. Allenz did an exceptional job in planning and scheduling for the technology classes for the upcoming 2015-2016 school year. Well done, Allenz!

Reflections on My Time in Haiti by Cheryl Davis

We booked our flight to Haiti one day before my sister was involved in a serious auto accident. My attention and energies were immediately focused on her and remained there until she was stabilized and making a good recovery several weeks later. By that time, Christmas preparations were in full swing as well as planning for an out-of-town family wedding to welcome in 2015. The few weeks remaining to prepare for our Tek4Kids staff trip to Haiti were a whirlwind of activity: purchasing supplies, clothing and medicines, handling routine home and work responsibilities and learning as much as I could about a new country and culture before traveling there.

Impressions From My Trip to Haiti by Jessica Edelen

The little six-seater plane that flew us from Port au Prince to Jérémie turned out not to be as terrifying as I had built it up in my head to be. Roger was a skilled pilot and I had my rosary with me, as did Cathy. We couldn’t crash now, right? And we didn’t. In fact, the bumpy ride in the pickup truck to the Tek4Kids house was much more treacherous than the plane ride.

    Tek4Kids iPad Initiative

This fall, we will launch the Tek4Kids iPad Initiative. Countless education apps designed for the iPad solve specific problems faced by schools in Haiti. Textbooks, which are costly and frequently unavailable in the traditional paper format, can be loaded on the iPad electronically. iPads enable students to hear the correct pronunciation of words during language studies. We are able to teach beyond Haiti’s required standardized tests by creating our own course lessons with the iAuthor application.
