During our last trip in October, we met with Fr. Tony and Madame Clovita, the principal of St. Therese Montessori School. They expressed their thankfulness to Tek4Kids, and we want to pass this on to you, our volunteers and donors!
With your help, Tek4Kids is able to work in Haitian schools like St. Therese Montessori School, supporting them with purified water and education otherwise not available to the students. Through you and your contributions, you make projects like computer education and the iPad Initiative possible!
St. Therese Montessori School just opened its doors after the summer break to around 300 students this year. After a recent cholera outbreak in the area of and around Jeremie, the need for clean water is huge. In collaboration with Madame Clovita, we were able to install three water jug filling stations near the classrooms. Even though constructed very simply, they have a big impact. After school, the students are able to fill their water jugs with treated water and take it home to their families, allowing them to also profit from protection against water-borne disease.
The children are able to receive a water jug from Tek4Kids for free. Unfortunately, we must charge a small fee for replacement jugs to insure proper treatment of the jugs, which are very durable if handled carefully. However, water is always free to the students. Before our program, most families could not afford to buy treated water. Their only options were rivers and pumps, sources that often contain dirt, bacteria and other substances causing various diseases. Now, they all have access to safe, clean drinking water.
