    The Tek4Kids Fall Virtual Tech Summit takes place on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 from 12:00-12:45 pm. Learn how Tek4Kids uses education and technology to change students’ lives in Haiti. The summit will explore new possibilities for learning and invite your ideas for improving education, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. The free event will live stream presentations, panel discussions and interviews with leaders engaging the theme: The Art of Possible.

    Another Boice Joins Tek4Kids in Haiti

    Working with Tek4Kids has become a family affair for the Boice family! Gary and Cathy Boice are its co-founders, while son Michael joined the team full-time last year to lead and coordinate all our technology efforts in Haiti.

    Recently, son Brooke traveled to Jeremie, Haiti to teach a Python class for third year students at St. Francis School of Technology, the certified technology school Tek4Kids began in 2015. Brooke lives in Boulder, CO with his wife and three children and is currently a Senior Advanced Services Architect in the Data Center ATG with Trace3.

    Brooke created a lab environment where everyone in the class had access to their own virtual machine to run Python, which is a high-level programming language used primarily for web and application development. During the class, Brooke presented brief segments of lecture, immediately followed by a lab to apply the lessons learned. He focused initially on the basic concepts of Python and the labs then challenged students to customize Python scripts that query live websites for weather data, based on location. Finally, the students built a basic Python web server.

    Brooke commented that he was surprised by the students’ level of engagement and noted that almost every student followed along and constantly asked questions. He said it was truly a pleasure to teach students who were so eager to learn!

    Students Enjoy English Classes at St. Francis School of Technology

    Tek4Kids strives to help students succeed in a global economy; English is a subject of particular focus at our school. Rose Yunker, a volunteer with Tek4Kids, is teaching English at St. Francis School of Technology from September through May. Rose helps students to learn English by using a program called Transparent Language which is taught on computers provided by Tek4Kids. She teaches classes for one hour per day. She states that the students see mastery of the English language as an inevitable key to a successful future. Rose also says many time students have said to her, “I am so happy you are here, I love English.” As a result of teaching English at our school, students may find employment more readily both within Haiti and remotely with other businesses.

    Students Excel in Technological Learning at St. John Bosco

    Tek4Kids partnered with St. John Bosco in 2013 to provide a technology-based learning environment for students, with the goal helping them excel in the field of technology and improve their opportunities for employment in the future. St. John Bosco serves more than 200 students in grades one through six. Currently, computer classes are taught in fifth and sixth grades.  A computer lab was built for students to use the laptops to their fullest potential.

    Computer Labs are Providing Great Skills for Brother Paulin Students

    Tek4Kids has provided 20 laptops to teach computer classes in three grades at Brother Paulin school which so far has been a success. Desks were built and chairs were provided for the students. We currently teach two computer classes per week.

    Computer Classes Improve Education at St. Louis High School

    St. Louis High School students are enjoying the educational benefits of Tek4Kids computer classes, which were added in 2012. In a survey completed in 2015, a large majority of students and teachers believed that the skills taught in the computer classes would make it easier for students to find careers in the future. Computer classes provide students with the opportunity to become proficient in English, typing and Microsoft programs such as Word and Excel.

    Technology Is Making Way for the Future at St. Therese Montessori School

    By providing young students at St. Therese Montessori School with the latest technology, it helps them to become familiar with software, typing, and English much sooner, giving them a clear path in education as they grow. These students will become familiar with modern computer software before reaching high school, giving them a head start.

    Computer Classes at St. Louis High School

    During our trips in October and November 2012, we arrived one step closer to our dream of helping the youth in Jeremie to have a better future. Two computer classrooms with more than 50 laptops are now operational at St. Louis High School! All 400+ students are learning to type with our three teachers: Nancy, John Wally and Josselin. Most are excited about classes, so much that the teachers sometimes have to chase them out of the classroom so they can get to their next class on time. Students with computers in their homes are progressing the fastest, of course, but the others aren’t far behind. Hard to believe, but next week, the students will be taking 1st quarter exams.
